15th Annual Kountz Callender Drew Transplant Symposium
The Kountz Callender Drew Transplant symposium is an annual event that assembles the health system community. The information shared is to aid health professionals on numerous levels to provide the best and equitable care to patients and families in the SE Michigan area. The symposium is designed to promote an exchange of ideas on healthcare disparities and their impact on organ and tissue donation. National and local experts highlight ways to engage physicians, health professionals and community leaders to become champions in saving lives. Presenters examine the roles and responsibilities of professional and public education to encourage strategies to increase the number of organs available for transplantation and to promote healthier communities. This year’s theme is Transplantation: Reflective Voices, Riveting Results and Revolutionary Future.

- Understand types of artificial intelligence and machine learning and their potential application as related to transplantation including potential advantages and disadvantages
- Learn about digital health as the future of healthcare and how patient voice is engaged in decision making
- Understand the importance and advances of normothermic regional perfusion in the United States
- Describe the impact of MOTTEP on transplantation in the minority community over the last 15 years
- Describe key variables that impact ability to build a diverse leadership team in transplantation and donation organizations
- Understand how xenotransplantation impacts the future for transplant patients
- Describe impact of unauthorized research and how it changed the landscape of healthcare
- Identify financial, housing and support resources available to transplant patients before, during, and after transplantation in Michigan
- Understand the impact of robotics on transplantation and the most common transplant related robotic procedures
- Explain the benefits of organ donation over the last 15 years from the perspectives of donor families and transplant recipients
- Discuss the importance of mental health for successful health outcomes
- Explore the history, recent advances, and successes in xenotransplantation
- Understand why the Expeditious Task Force was created, it’s success to date, and future plans
