Gift of Life Michigan’s Sheila Alston receives Association for Multicultural Affairs in Transplantation’s Nurse of the Year DAISY Award

Sheila Alston received the DAISY Award for exceptional care in nursing.

Gift of Life Michigan is proud to announce that its own Senior Performance Improvement Specialist, Sheila Alston, received the جمعية شؤون التعددية الثقافية في الزرع (AMAT) Nurse of the Year DAISY Award. Alston was honored during AMAT’s annual meeting that took place Sept.10-13 in San Diego, Calif.  This marked the first time the organization has given out the award.

The DAISY Award is an international program that rewards and celebrates the extraordinary clinical skill and compassionate care given by nurses every day. Alston was highly recommended for the award by multiple colleagues across the country for her outstanding performance and exceptional skill as a nurse working in organ and tissue donation.

The honor comes following her assistance during the 2023 annual meeting where she administered the medical care the AMAT President needed following an infection that would have prevented his attendance. Sheila went above and beyond, even securing a knee scooter for mobility and keeping in contact with his family.

“This feels like a full circle moment,” Alston said. “It is an absolute honor to still be recognized for my skills and dedication to caring for others at this stage in my career.”

In her 40-year career, she has consistently demonstrated her dedication to saving lives through her work at Gift of Life Michigan and as a past AMAT board member.

In addition to her work with AMAT, Alston has also served on the American Board for Transplant Certification in multiple capacities, including recently as its Immediate Past President. She joined Gift of Life Michigan in 2003 as a donation coordinator.

The best way to save lives is by joining the Michigan Organ Donor Registry. To register or learn more about the donation process, visit giftoflifemichigan.org
