Antoine Lee

Antoine Lee was the oldest son of Edith Lee-Payne. On Feb. 19, 1992, he tragically lost his life. After doctors did everything they could to save his life, Edith was asked if she would like to move forward with organ, eye and tissue donation.  

While organ donation was not something she had ever discussed, or considered, she decided to proceed. She said yes for the purpose of keeping part of Antoine alive, knowing that a part of him would still be on this earth giving someone else life, which brought her comfort.  

That someone turned out to be James Lovett, Jr.

James lived a healthy life. He took care of himself, didn’t smoke or drink, so when he was in the hospital in need of a heart transplant it came as a shock. 

His doctors at Henry Ford Hospital discovered he had a virus that was attacking his heart. He needed a transplant, desperately. He was in the hospital the day he learned there was a donor match.  

Antoine’s heart saved his life.  

Five years after his transplant, James reached out to Edith to thank her for making that decision. He sent a thank you card with a letter that Edith still has to this day. They would eventually meet at a press conference held at the same hospital that saved James’ life.  

James became family—not just to Edith, but to Antoine’s son, who was only four months old when his father passed. James showed up for holidays, school events, and graduations. He called Edith “Mama Payne.”

Edith and James became advocates, sharing their story at hospitals and events to bring awareness to organ donation. Even after James’ death — more than 20 years after receiving Antoine’s heart — Edith continues to share both sides of their story. 

Lee Lovett Foundation

Before his passing, James and Edith started the Lee-Lovett Foundation, a non-profit organization promoting and encouraging organ and tissue donation. The organization particularly focuses on the African American community where donors are most needed.  

Edith serves as executive director of the organization.

In addition to her volunteer work with James, Edith learned more about the organ donation process. She attended several organ recovery procedures herself, wanting to fully understand what happens during the surgery. Her firsthand knowledge gave her the ability to calm fears and explain the process with compassion and clarity to other families. 

Inspired to help other families, Edith began supporting those faced with the decision that she once had to make. She became a presence in hospital rooms, sitting beside grieving parents, listening, and offering peace.

Today, Edith continues to share her and James’ story to bring awareness to organ, eye and tissue donation.
