Hurley Medical Center named Gift of Life Michigan’s Hospital of the Year

Gift of Life Michigan

FLINT, Mich. – Gift of Life Michigan has named Hurley Medical Center in Flint as its Hospital of the Year for 2025 for its outstanding commitment to organ and tissue donation. The hospital is the first to win this honor twice. It was previously recognized in 2020.

In 2024, Hurley ranked second statewide in the number of organ donors, with 29, and another 25 donors gave tissue. Among Hurley’s greatest accomplishments is significantly improving the donation process by making more than 50 donor referrals from the Emergency Department.

The practice occurs at other hospitals but not with the same volume. Doing so enables earlier referrals, providing more time to assess patients and communicate with families.

“The team at Hurley Medical Center has cultivated a strong donation culture that is clearly embraced beginning with its leadership,” said Dorrie Dils, president and CEO, Gift of Life Michigan. “The care and dedication they provide to ensure their patient’s final wish is fulfilled is inspiring. It is also lifesaving to the recipients who are desperately waiting for that gift.”

Hurley Medical Center will be recognized during Gift of Life Michigan’s annual Champions Gala on May 2 at The Westin Book Cadillac in Detroit.

“Hurley Medical Center is honored to be chosen as the Gift of Life Hospital of the Year,” says Dr. Michael Jaggi, Hurley Medical Center Chief Medical Officer. “Organ donation requires teamwork, dedication and a culture that is supportive to organ donation.  Gift of Life and Hurley Medical Center are great teammates in promoting organ donation for our community.  This is a great award and a testament to our collaborative relationship with Gift of Life!”

The annual Champions Gala has recognized more than 140 people and organizations supporting organ, eye and tissue donation at the highest level in Michigan since the event began in 2019. The awards represent every aspect of the donation process from efforts to grow the Michigan Organ Donor Registry to incredible work in schools, communities, the legislature, hospitals, transplant centers and more.
