Luther H. Buchele
Luther Buchele worked as Executive Secretary for the Inter-Cooperative Council (ICC) a non-profit student housing organization at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, for 34 years. He retired in 1985. Before that Luther worked for student coop housing at the University of Kansas in Lawrence. In 1987 Luther was inducted into the Cooperative Hall of Fame of the National Cooperative Business Association in Washington, D.C. The two trees in the Twin Pines were adopted in 1922 as the Universal Cooperative emblem. Pine trees are an ancient symbol of life, the council has the emblems quality of eternity and has the two pine trees stand together to emphasize the mutual nature of cooperation. Luther believed that student coop housing helped young people learn how to manage their houses, live together and develop lasting friendships. It also would prepare them for future professions.
