Brain Death Determination: A Comprehensive Simulation Workshop
OVERVIEW
Brain death assessment and determination require thorough knowledge, as well as technical and interpersonal skills to assure accurate diagnosis and optimize family understanding and acceptance. This workshop aims to provide attendees with a comprehensive experience that will enhance confidence in brain death determination and management.
TARGET AUDIENCE
Physicians and Advance Practice Registered Nurses in neurology, neurosurgery, pulmonology, intensivist, critical care, trauma surgery and/or emergency or internal medicine interested in a comprehensive experience that will enhance confidence with brain death diagnosis and management.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
• Recognize when to initiate brain death studies and how to determine prerequisites for beginning the brain death exam.
• Recall all of the necessary steps in conducting a thorough and accurate clinical exam to determine brain death diagnosis following the AAN revised guidelines.
• Effectively communicate grave prognosis to families in a sensitive but definitive way, allowing for understanding of patient death.

Panayiotis Varelas, MD, PhD, FAAN, FNCS
Gift of Life is pleased to welcome Panayiotis Varelas, MD, back to Michigan to direct this program.
Dr. Varelas currently serves as the Bender Endowed Chair of Neurology at Albany Medical College. A neurointensivist, Dr. Varelas established and served as director of the neuro intensive care unit at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, prior to his move to Albany, New York.
Dr. Varelas contributed to the new AAN Guidelines (October 2023) on the determination of brain death/death by neurologic criteria.
Dr. Varelas received his medical education at the University of Athens, after which he became an officer in the Greek Air Force, before completing a research fellowship at Baylor College of Medicine, a residency in Neurology at Yale and a Neurocritical Care Fellowship at Johns Hopkins.
